Pitch Wars Team Interview with Magda Sainte and mentor, J.A. Crawford

Friday, 14 January 2022  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

Our mentors are mentoring, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 9, 2021, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2021 Pitch Wars Mentor and Mentee Teams.

Next up, we have . . .

Magda Sainte – Mentee

J.A., why did you choose Magda?

Mentee selection was a razor thin process, but I could not get HOUNDS out of my head. The night after reading the partial, I dreamed about the story. It sticks with you.

Magda, why did you choose to submit to J.A.?

When I saw on Joe’s manuscript wishlist that he’d like an Agatha Christie mystery set in the shire, I knew that I HAD to submit to him. My dream for HOUNDS was for it to fall squarely in the intersection of Fantasy and Crime. Additionally, his book Jove Brand is Near Death has so many elements that I would love to be able to replicate–fast-paced, vivid characters, funny, exciting, fresh. Joe has a pitch-perfect sense for plot and character pacing, which is something I needed. I don’t think I could have dreamt up a more perfect mentor.

J.A., summarize Magda’s book in 3 words.

Atmospheric Fantasy Whodunit

J.A., tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.

I’ve been a dungeon master since I was a teenager. I love role playing games and game design. It was a coin flip if I was going to write books or RPGs (and I still may).

Magda, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?

When I decided to apply to Pitch Wars, I hoped to improve my manuscript, but more than anything I wanted to become a better writer. I knew that I needed experience with the revision process, and my mentor has astounded me time and again with his insights and kind suggestions. Also, I’m a hugely shy and private person. I knew if anything were to force me to engage with terrific (and not scary!) fellow writers, it would be this fabulous opportunity.

Magda, tell us about yourself. What makes you and your manuscript unique?

My family and I live in the foothills of the Wasatch Front with a gaggle of rabbits, dogs, ducks, and a spirited goose. When I’m not working at the bookstore down the street or battling the endless rocks in my garden, I’m writing mysteries.

COMING JULY 13, 2021

When Ken Allen is framed for the murder, the only way to escape the deathtrap is to play the part of famous, fictional superspy Jove Brand for real. Ken confronts Chinese film moguls, Russian oligarchs, and the dowager queen of the Jove Brand franchise, all of whom enjoy dwelling in elaborate lairs and will do anything it takes to secure the rights to the multi-billion dollar franchise.
