Meet Elle Jauffret and Roselle Kaes

Team: #TeamKillerDishes

RoselleRoselle Kaes (Mentor), tell us a little about yourself.

I love reading almost everything from fantasy, literary, romance and all categories spanning from Adult to MG. My reading material is determined by what mood I’m in.

My favourite genres are multicultural and historical fiction. I like the idea that I’m learning something new when I’m reading. I have to keep my storehouse of interesting facts full so I can hold my own in trivia games.

My writing style is sensory and lyrical which is great since I write multicultural and literary.

Having spent my formative years in France, I grew up on Jules Vernes, Alexandre Dumas, and Victor Hugo. Temporarily a cyborg (a machine pumped my blood while doctors repaired my heart), I developed an early taste for Science Fiction (Bradburry, Orwell) which turned into a puberty-induced love for dark tales (Poe, Kafka) and historical drama (Steinbeck, Zola). I read across the genres as my taste is very eclectic and varies with my mood and the seasons. However, I tend to favor mystery/thriller, speculative fiction and literary fiction (bonus if the setting is foreign or the main character is physically scarred).

My writing style varies greatly. My present PW manuscript is a historical mystery written in the first person that can be defined as between literary and commercial.

Roselle, why did you decide to participate in Pitch Wars?

I wanted to give back to the writing community and I’ve always been a fan of Brenda Drake’s contest having made it in to two Pitch Madness rounds.

Elle, why did you decide to participate in Pitch Wars?

One of my friends mentioned the amazing opportunity and I had everything to gain (and nothing to lose).

Roselle, what are you most excited for?

Working with my amazing mentee Elle. I want the agents salivating over this beautiful manuscript the way I have been. Elle is a very talented writer and I can’t wait to see this turned into a book on my shelf- with an autograph from the writer herself of course.

Elle, what are you most excited for?

Being able to present the best version of my manuscript to agents who have requested and will (hopefully) request a full. I also look forward to getting to know my wonderful mentor (Roselle Kaes) better and keeping in touch with her beyond PW. No matter what happens at the agent round, I have already lucked out by connecting with my mentor, a fellow writer who gets me and my manuscript and with whom I have a lot in common (so much that it’s like I’ve stepped into the Twilight Zone).

Elle, describe your novel in 3 words.

Roselle, describe your mentee’s novel in 3 words.

Roselle Kaes is passionate about food and her Chinese-Filipino heritage. Inspired by her late great grandfather, she wrote HUNGER as a tribute to him. She completed the manuscript with major revisions and the help of her critique partners. She is a graduate of Humanities and History at York University. When she is not writing, she is embroidering, illustrating, and chasing after her husband, daughter, and fluff beast of a cat on the north shore of Lake Erie.

She is repped by Ann Collette of Rees Literary.
