Pitch Wars Interview with mentee Pete Fanning and mentor, Joel Brigham

Monday, 6 December 2021  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

Our mentors are mentoring, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 9, 2021, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2021 Pitch Wars Mentor and Mentee Teams.

Next up, we have . . .

Joel, why did you choose to submit to Pete?

While there were a lot of talented writers who submitted to me, Pete’s words just knocked me off my feet. His story about young love and music captured my heart, but I also felt like I had a clear vision for how I could help. His combination of gorgeous words, plot potential, and general amiability made it an easy pick for me. In the weeks since we started working together, I’ve had no regrets. We work together really well.

Pete, why did you choose to submit to Joel?

I found myself nodding as I read Joel’s bio, his favorite books, experience, and mentoring style. By the time I saw he was looking for contemporary I knew I had to sub.

Joel, can you summarize Pete’s book in 3 words?

Love from Trauma

Pete, can you summarize your book in 3 words?

Friends are family

Joel, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.

I have synesthesia, which means I can “feel” color. It works with music, words, grammar, story, people, places, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, etc. If it exists, it has a color feel to me. Hard to explain, but other synesthetes know what I’m sayin’!

Pete, do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?

I’m already getting it, in heaps! Joel has a way of getting to the heart of a story. I also like how he lets me think I’m the one who came up with a good idea. Jokes aside, we’re only a few weeks in and I’ve come to take my writing much more professionally.

Pete, tell us about yourself. What makes you and your manuscript unique?

I think this book contains a real life mix of pain, love, and redemption to it. I’d like to think the same about myself.

Thank you for supporting our Pitch Wars Teams! The Agent Showcase is February 9-14, 2022. Make sure to stop by then and check out all our mentees’ entries when it opens.
