PW Interviews

Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase on November 3rd-9th, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2016 Pitch Wars Teams.

And now, we have . . .

Tamara: Why did you choose Molly?

Molly’s Wish List attracted me right away when I read, “I love to see instances where a girl/woman is in a profession/situation that is tailored toward men and she’s hacking it right there with the boys.” My YA contemporary submission GRIDIRON GIRL is about a girl who competes against her boyfriend to be the starting quarterback of the football team, so the whole story is about her trying to hack it with the guys. Also, I want to say that I took the advice to ask questions of the mentors seriously when picking my six. Molly didn’t specifically mention sports,so I tweeted her to be sure she has an interest in them. Fortunately for me, she does! My nextstep was to read some of my potential mentors’ works (because narrowing down to six was HARD), and one chapter of Molly’s EDGE OF CHAOS had me in love. She made me feel instantly, and I knew that was a weakness in my own work. I needed to increase the emotional payoff. At that moment, Molly went to the top of my list, and there are no words for the emotional payoff I felt when she actually picked me!

Molly: Why did you choose Tamara?

The concept of GRIDIRON GIRL appealed to me right away—a girl going up against her boyfriend for the quarterback position? No question I needed to read this! Plus, I’d seen her ontwitter, actively asking questions of mentors and really putting that extra effort in to see who would be a good fit. I knew she was serious then and once I read her pages, I was hooked.

Tamara: Summarize your book in three words.

Epic. Female. Quarterback.

Molly: Summarize Tamara‘s book in three words.

Hot. Competitive. Heart.

Tamara: Tell us about yourself. What makes you and your MS unique?

My husband and high school sweetheart was the starting quarterback of our football team for three years, but he’s not the only quarterback in his family. He and his two brothers all played the position. Over the years, I’ve seen the backyard games, heard them compare their stats and accolades, and laughed at the intensity of their competition. One day, I got to thinking: what if they had had a little sister? What would it have been like to be her? Then I got the idea for Julia, the kid sister of three quarterbacks, a volleyball player who really wants to be on the gridiron. So really, my manuscript reflects my family and our lives in so many ways, especially the football and sibling dynamics. That said, I think this sports story is unique in that Julia faces more challenges than most to win the position, including competing against her boyfriend. Her expectations are based on societal and cultural norms, which makes her decisions flawed. Like so many of us, she has to decide whose expectations she will honor — other people’s or her own.

Molly: Tell us about yourself. Something we might not already know.

I’m a military spouse and mother of two amazing toddlers plus one stubborn English Bulldog. When I’m not writing in the wee hours of the night, I enjoy binge watching the Walking Dead or catching up on my never ending TBR list. And I have the secret wish that sleep wasn’t a necessity so I could get everything done with time to spare 🙂

Edge of Recovery (Love on the Edge) by [Lee, Molly]
Edge of Recovery

I thought second chances only happened to good, decent people.
Not the broken and damaged monsters like me.
But it did.
And I can’t control it.
But I need to.
Charlie is my sponsor, the one person I’m not supposed to touch, but my heart has locked on to her and is finally beating after years of barely moving.
I’m in over my head in more ways than one, and as I try to be the man she sees behind the monster, I only sink deeper, two sides of myself battling for clarity. The one that dares to hope, and the one that already knows I’ll lose everything.
I’m terrified my jagged past will slice her to ribbons but as my sponsor she’s obligated to dig up all the broken pieces and try to put them back together.
I don’t know what scares me more, who she’ll find when she’s done, or how far she’ll run once she realizes the truth.

Thank you for supporting our Pitch Wars Teams! And don’t forget to stop by the Agent Showcase starting November 3rd to see how our teams do in the final round.
