Mentor Spotlights with Young Adult Mentors (Part 2) & Book Giveaway! (Corrected)

Tuesday, 22 September 2020  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

From September 21-26, we’re posting mini-interviews with most of the 2020 Pitch Wars mentors. We thought it would be fun to have them answer one question. A question that would give you an idea of their likes and personalities. And possibly point out a mentor you may have missed on your exhaustive search for which mentors you’ll submit to when our submission window opens. Don’t know what Pitch Wars is START HERE

This is the question we asked our mentors to answer: Invite three authors (living or dead) to dinner – who and why?

And here are their answers …

“Franz Kafka, Hiromu Arakawa, and J. R. R. Tolkien; one for his words, one for her characters, one for his worlds. I just want to drink and listen to them. See how their beautiful minds comprehend this world, how they can create stories that stick to the mind, and what they think of each other’s works. I want to learn from them, how to write sentences that play with the mind, how to have a whole cast of characters grow and shine, and how to come up with fictional, magical worlds that feel so real.”

“Ooh, I love this question! I’d invite Brian Jacques, because his books got me into reading. Taylor Jenkins Reid, because Evenlyn Hugo is one of my favorite books of all time. And Ernest Hemingway, so I can ruin the dinner challenging him to a fist fight. (I’d win.)”

“Jane Austen, Nora Ephron and Dorothy Parker walked into a restaurant together (this takes place in 2015 so everything is FINE and LOVELY and everyone can HUG even) and, hey, I was there too! We talked about plotting and humor, and more plotting (because I can never have too many tricks for how to get through the dreaded middle slog). We drank, we quipped, my fangirl was showing but nobody cared, and I left with at least a dozen instantly viral quotes to tweet on that silly, fun little social media site where everyone just talks about their favorite TV shows. “

“My co-mentor J.Elle will tell you—I *swoon* over fantasy world building. I love creating worlds, reading them, editing them, they are just my fav thing. Above ALL however, I get obsessed when a world is brilliantly crafted around a character’s personality—the magic challenges their flaws, the culture challenges their world views, or both serve as metaphors for the story’s theme. So I would get Sabaa Tahir, RF Kuang, and VE Schwab in a room to nerd the heck out over how they weave their worlds and characters together so seamlessly! #DreamDinnerParty. I’m *swooning* just thinking about it.”
