Wednesday, 22 September 2021  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

From September 22-28, we’re posting mini-interviews with some of our 2021 Pitch Wars mentors. We thought it would be fun to have them answer one question. A question that would give you an idea of their personalities. And possibly spotlight a mentor you may have missed on your exhaustive search through the blog hop for the perfect four mentors to submit to when the Pitch Wars 2021 submission window opens. Don’t know what Pitch Wars is START HERE

This is the question we asked our mentors to answer:

If you could tell your younger self anything about writing or the publishing world you’ve learned or didn’t expect when starting out, what would it be?

And here are their answers …

“Be careful who you send your manuscript to! Some of those people you don’t know who seem really excited to read your book are going to give you really bad advice. On that note, don’t listen to every single piece of feedback you get! If something doesn’t feel right, reflect on why, and then do what feels best for your book!”

Karen Bao

“I’d like to drag my younger self away from the computer and say, “Girl why aren’t you outside? There’s no coronavirus; you have no excuse!” Especially for younger writers, it’s hard to continually be inspired if you’re not constantly experiencing all the world has to offer.”

“You may not always love publishing, but you’ll always love writing.”

Susan Bishop Crispell

“Find your people! Writing and publishing is such a rollercoaster of emotions, but having writing friends to celebrate and commiserate with and help you continually grow as a writer makes the ride worth it. The lows aren’t as hard when you know you’re not alone. And the highs are even more of a thrill (even the small victories) when you’re all in it together.”
