A Pitch Wars Team Interview with Justin Sturm and mentor, Paris Wynters

Sunday, 3 February 2019  |  Posted by Lisa Leoni

Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 6, 2019, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2018 Pitch Wars Teams.

Next up, we have . . .

Paris, why did you choose Justin?

I loved the Alice in Wonderland Space Opera concept with A.I.s. It was something completely different. Justin’s characters were awesome as well. I felt like I wanted to be friends with them (yes, even the bad ones). My interactions with Justin also showed what an amazingly hard worker he would be.

Justin, why did you choose to submit to Paris?

I was looking for mentors who showed an interest in science fiction and space opera, and Paris fit the bill. I also liked her sense of humor, and was curious what it would be like working with a romance author. It’s not a perspective I’ve sought out before, and I wanted to know what she would think of my story.

Paris, summarize Justin’s book in 3 words.

Badass diverse characters

Mercenaries, Puppets, Family

Paris, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.

I’m a huge HALO fan, have two working dogs, and a Masters in Biology. Something about myself I haven’t mentioned yet…I called out sick from work when HALO 5 came out and played it all day, I suffer from hemochromatosis, and I’m a fairly decent archer.

Justin, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?

I’m hopeful the program will teach me to be a better writer and how to transition towards being an author. There’s so much to learn and do, and it helps to have someone whose already walked this path giving me advice. I’m also very pleased with the things Paris has pushed me to revise and rethink in my work. She saw areas I could grow in that I’d never considered before, and it’s exciting to imagine what my next manuscript will be like based on what I’ve learned so far.

Justin, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your manuscript unique?

I’m a dad with a daughter writing about a daughter and her dad. My story is about a thief who is driven back to her dysfunctional family by a renegade AI that’s trapped in her head. She needs to convince them to help her without giving away that she’s being maneuvered by this mysterious entity. When I set out to write this, I wanted it to be something my daughter could enjoy when she was old enough, and so it’s really meant to be a fun work about the characters growing and doing cool things.
