A Pitch Wars Team Interview with Alexis Ames and her mentor, Sarah Remy

Friday, 4 January 2019  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 6, 2019, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2018 Pitch Wars Teams.

Next up, we have . . .

Sarah, why did you choose Alexis?

I always feel supremely lucky when I pick up a book and can’t put it down again until I turn the last page, AND I don’t stop thinking about it for days after. It’s like finding that needle in the haystack. And that’s how Alexis’ manuscript was for me. I carried it around with me for 24 hours, reading whenever I could snatch the time. I thought about the characters constantly. Also, I cried real tears at the end which – believe it or not – is a big plus. It’s not often an author can make me feel that invested in their world and the people who live in it. Alexis has a real talent for balancing super strong plot with relatable characters. CHAMOS definitely showcases that magical combination.

Alexis, why did you choose to submit to Sarah?

When I was first deciding which mentors to submit to, Sarah went immediately to the top of my list, and I’m beyond grateful they chose my manuscript! Sarah was looking for Adult Sci-Fi with LGBTQ themes, which fits my manuscript perfectly. Among other things, I knew they would be able to help me fine-tune my world-building in order to make this story and this universe come alive for readers. While I can see a world perfectly in my head, sometimes I do TOO much showing instead of telling, which can result in confusion. Sarah has been an immense help in identifying these points in my manuscript that need more clarification. They’ve also been an excellent sounding board for ideas as I revise this story.

Sarah, summarize Alexis’s book in 3 words.

Robots. Spaceships. Dissension.

Alexis, summarize your book in 3 words.

Androids in love

Sarah, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.

If I were allowed one supernaturally endowed talent for 24 hours I’d choose +10 Arting. I’ve always wanted to be Michelangelo but I can’t draw even a believable stick figure.

Alexis, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?

Mostly, I hope to become a stronger writer and stronger editor. I’m very much a pantser, which results in sooooo many revisions once a manuscript is complete. I hope to learn how to do more of the work upfront so I can avoid this in the future, and also to learn how to look at a manuscript with a more critical eye and identify points that need revising on my own. I also am looking forward to refining the way I write queries and synopses. Beyond that, the community I’ve met through Pitch Wars in just the past few weeks alone has proven invaluable!

Alexis, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your manuscript unique?

I’ve always loved science and technology, and as far as science fiction is concerned, I tend to gravitate toward stories that involve robots and/or androids. While I have by no means read/watched every piece of media that involves artificial life, I like to think that this manuscript is a unique take on androids, their society, and how they might someday co-exist with humans. Plus it’s got the forbidden human/android romance I’ve always wanted to read in a novel. 🙂

Avani and Mal’s journey comes to its gripping conclusion in this final installment of the Bone Magic series by Sarah Remy

The desert has outgrown its boundaries…

The warriors of the sands have united for the first time. They are newly privy to the secret sidhe roads beneath mountains, the ones that used to keep the flatlands safe. And they are marching toward Wilhaiim with weapons of steel.

Wilhaiim is out of options…

King Renault’s choice is untenable: watch the flatlands fall, or work with Malachi Doyle in a secret gambit to revive Wilhaiim’s ancient mechanized guardians, the Automata. The Automata have a terrible, bloodied history, but Mal believes they are his kingdom’s only hope of survival.

Mal wavers on the edge of insanity…

Avani lives with Mal in her head, an unwilling witness to his increasing madness. Her nights are filled with dreams of darkness and despair, her days troubled by guilt and uncertainty. Her beloved Goddess draws distant as Mal’s influence takes its toll. And as the bloodshed, brutality, and loss multiples, she and Mal will learn that determination is sometimes more potent than sorcery…and that the greatest sacrifices are often inescapable.
