A Pitch Wars Interview with Marisa Urgo, and her mentor Stephen Morgan

Saturday, 26 January 2019  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 6, 2019, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2018 Pitch Wars Teams.

Next up, we have . . .

Stephen, why did you choose Marisa?

This is a bestseller in the making. Upmarket premise, powerful character arcs, killer voice, LGBTQ and mental health rep. Plus, I’m a huge Disney fan and…well, to tell you why that matters would spoil one of the biggest unexpected delights of the book.

Marisa, why did you choose to submit to Stephen?

I liked his background in publishing, and honestly? Just a good feeling.

Stephen, summarize Marisa’s book in 3 words.

YA Gillian Flynn

Marisa, summarize your book in 3 words.

Find your truth.

Stephen, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.

I hope to one day have a small ranch dedicated to fostering rescue animals.

Marisa, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?

I want to learn how to edit. I’m okay at it, but I need to refine my skills and find a reliable method I can depend on. Stephen has helped with that a lot so far. I’m also really happy that I’ve met some great people and have a new community of friends.

Marisa, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your manuscript unique?

I’ve been desperately wanting to read a book about a vanished commercial plane but couldn’t find one… so I wrote one! It came from the heart of my own interests and things I’ve learned. Also, my main character deals with a lot of things I dealt with in high school, so it’s authenticity speaks for itself.

Description:

Dear Thomas,

I know you’re angry. It’s true, I was sent to expose your mentor as a fraud illusionist, and instead I have put your secret in jeopardy. I fear I have even put your life in jeopardy. For that I can only beg your forgiveness. I’ve fallen for you. You know I have. And I never wanted to create a rift between us, but if it means protecting you from those who wish you dead—I’ll do it. I’ll do anything to keep you safe, whatever the sacrifice. Please forgive me for all I’ve done and what I’m about to do next. I promise, it’s one magic trick no one will ever see coming.

Love,
Saverio
