Like a Virgin Contest Blog Hop

Friday, 12 July 2013  |  Posted by Brenda Drake

I haven’t done a blog hop in a long time. But when Kristina Perez and Rhiann Wynn-Nolet invited me to be one of the Guest Stars in the upcoming Like a Virgin Pitch Contest and write a post about my first editorial letter, I thought I should join in the blog hop too.

Click here to find out more about the Like a Virgin Pitch Contest.

Here’s how it’s going down. Blog hop participants answer questions about their firsts, post them to their blogs, and then hop to the other participants’ blogs on the linky (below) and comment.

That’s simple, right? It’s a great way to meet new writer friends. Feel free to join in. I apologize if I can’t make it to all the blogs (I will try). I have two deadlines and a huge birthday pool party at my home this weekend for Stevie first birthday. Here’s a cute pic so you won’t get mad at me (I hope).

Anyway, here’s my answers…

How do you remember your first kiss?

Wet, short, and totally awkward. Can’t even remember the name of the boy, and I was twelve. Maybe. It could have been a dream.

What was your first favorite love song?

I’m going with my all time favorite Journey song, Faithfully.

What’s the first thing you do when you begin writing for the day?

Pour coffee.

Who’s the first writer who truly inspired you to become a writer?

Frances Hodgson Burnett. The Secret Garden is my all time favorite book. I read it when I was ten or twelve. Not sure. I’ve read the book several times, watched the movie, listened to the audio book, and I never tire of it. Of course, there were many more writers after her that inspired me, especially in the fantasy genre.

Did the final revision of your first book have the same first chapter it started with?

Never. Every book I’ve written started someplace else before someone knocked some sense into my head. I have either cut chapters to get to the start or rewritten the entire beginning before.

For your first book, which came first: major characters, plot or setting?

I always start with a setting, and then I populate it with characters. After that, I niggle with the plot.

What’s the first word you want to roll off the tip of someone’s tongue when they think of your writing?

Plausible.

Now, go check out all the other participants firsts!

The linky code isn’t working for me so click here to find the other participants and to sign up on linky.

  • Plausible! Hah! That’s something we hope to achieve, isn’t it?

    Great answers.

Unfortunately, I’m with you on the first chapter thing. In fact, I’m dealing with it right now. I’m starting to think I should just write the first chapter last 🙂

  • Burnett fan here too, though for me it was Sara Crewe/A Little Princess. So glad you could join in the fun for our first contest 😀

  • Thanks so much for joining our hop! Your Guest Post is fab, too. Can’t wait to unveil it! And Journey, man, Journey. That dates us 😉

  • Ha! I love that you niggle with the plot…I seem to do a lot of that too 😉 Excited for your guest post!

I absolutely love The Secret Garden. My mother would read me a chapter of it every night when I was very young and it’s probably one of the reasons I started writing. There’s also a Broadway musical – highly recommended if you haven’t already seen it!

ah, I love Secret Garden, too. And I already knew you started your writing with coffee. . . yay for being a guest star!

  • Thanks for helping out with this awesome contest and hop. I have to agree …. nothing like the Secret Garden. 🙂
